Sanyu Babies’ Home
Sanyu Babies' Home is an orphanage for babies and toddlers under three years' age in Kampala, Uganda. It is Kampala's oldest "baby orphanage" and is home to 44 children.
Niteo volunteers visited Sanyu in 2008 and it was a profoundly moving experience for all.
Niteo and a generous private donor contributed money to fund additional staff at the orphanage. Five young women from King's Daughters, a refuge and rehabilitation centre for at-risk girls in Kampala, have been hired to help care for the babies. The girls will receive funds to enable them to continue their education and in return will work at the orphanage and help the staff. Despite their best intentions, though, many of the volunteers at the orphanage are illiterate people who have never received training in the care and development of very young children.
In 2009, Niteo will provide that training.
The King's Daughters/Sanyu Project (dates T.B.A.) will bring medical and ECE personnel from Canada to Kampala for a two-week intensive training course. Niteo hopes to take psychologists, nurses, speech language pathologists, and more – any discipline whose focus is child development or childcare.
Niteo is currently seeking members of these medical disciplines as well as other interested persons. For more information, see the post immediately after this one.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 09 2009
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION MEETING
Uganda 2009!
Niteo is going back to Uganda in summer 2009, and now is the time to get involved. An information meeting will be held in the board room of the main branch of the Okanagan Regional Library (1380 Ellis Street) on Sunday, January 18th from 2-3:30 p.m.
This time our focus will be shared between two amazing places: Sanyu orphanage and the Eva Ruf resource centre. Educator participants in the summer 2009 trip will work with Ugandan peers to facilitate professional development, help create an international learning community and run half-day camps for local students. Medical and educational personnel will help equip the staff of Sanyu, Uganda's oldest baby orphanage, in the care of very young children.
The demanding technical nature of the work at Sanyu means that Niteo has an urgent need for personnel such as early childhood educators, nurses, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and physiotherapists. Students of these or other medical disciplines are also encouraged to apply.
The Eva Ruf team will be composed of educators who will share theoretical and practical strategies with their Ugandan peers as well as 'field test' with local students.
Both teams could be complemented with caring volunteers, regardless of profession or degree. Everyone with a heart to serve is invited to come to the session.
Niteo's executive director Karine Liegmann will present an informative session detailing the responsibilities and roles of the team in general and the Sanyu team in particular. Board of Directors member Erika van Oyen will present a multi-media slide show from last year's trip and speak about the educational team.
