FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JANUARY 09 2009
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION MEETING
Uganda 2009!
Niteo is going back to Uganda in summer 2009, and now is the time to get involved. An information meeting will be held in the board room of the main branch of the Okanagan Regional Library (1380 Ellis Street) on Sunday, January 18th from 2-3:30 p.m.
This time our focus will be shared between two amazing places: Sanyu orphanage and the Eva Ruf resource centre. Educator participants in the summer 2009 trip will work with Ugandan peers to facilitate professional development, help create an international learning community and run half-day camps for local students. Medical and educational personnel will help equip the staff of Sanyu, Uganda's oldest baby orphanage, in the care of very young children.
The demanding technical nature of the work at Sanyu means that Niteo has an urgent need for personnel such as early childhood educators, nurses, speech language pathologists, psychologists, and physiotherapists. Students of these or other medical disciplines are also encouraged to apply.
The Eva Ruf team will be composed of educators who will share theoretical and practical strategies with their Ugandan peers as well as 'field test' with local students.
Both teams could be complemented with caring volunteers, regardless of profession or degree. Everyone with a heart to serve is invited to come to the session.
Niteo's executive director Karine Liegmann will present an informative session detailing the responsibilities and roles of the team in general and the Sanyu team in particular. Board of Directors member Erika van Oyen will present a multi-media slide show from last year's trip and speak about the educational team.
